WHITE PLAINS, NY
OCTOBER 2, 2008
The Modsquad softball team celebrated their successful season "south of the border" last night, hitting up a local Mexican Joint for some burritos, conquistodors, chimichangas, chesse thingies, salsa, guacamole, and a margarita or two.
Or seven.
Highlighting the night's events was emcee/skipper Alan Brogdon, who handed out numerous awards and thank yous.
Centerfielder Chris Iannantuoni won the coveted Regular Season MVP award for his team leading .674 batting average, 31 hits, 10 extra base hits, 24 RBIs, and 24 runs scored. He is in the running for the "I'd Forget My Head if it Wasn't Attached Award" because he left his trophy at the restaurant.
Rightfielder Bruce Lin won "Most Improved Player", as evident by last year's questioning "How do I hit the ball" translating into this year's .583 batting average with five extra base hits and eleven runs batted in.
Eric Klein received the "Hard Nosed Player of the Year" award for his willingness to play in the Championship Series with a busted nose. Dr. Scott Berns earned the "Moonlight Graham Award" in honor of his ability to play excellent baseball while delivering quality health care.
Pete Coletta took home the "Rookie of the Year Award", while fellow A/Vers Frank Vitale (Coach's Award) and Chris Lima (Playoff MVP) also went home with some hardware.
Shortstop Nick Difranza won the "Bust a Gut Award" for his all out hustling approach to the game, while Rob Lucas won the "Comeback Player of the Year Award".
Todd Dias, proud owner of the "Five Tool Player of the Year Award" noted in his exceptance speech that he had a "screwdriver, hammer, a wrench...." HAHAHAHA.....now the award takes on a new meaning.
John Leahy won the "Allen Iverson Award" dedicated to the player who choses to show up whenever he wants. Leahy was not there to receive his award last night, so a small ceremony will take place later today. (FYI, ceremony=I drop the award on his desk at 8:25am)
Kyle Bobek did his home country proud, bringing in top honors, receiving the "Best Player from Minnesota Award". Kyle was at first excited, then quickly exclaimed "Hey! Wait! I'm the only player from Minnesota on this team!"
Three fans were honored for their hard work and dedication to the team; Vince Sampugnaro and Family, Lisa Bellsey, and Rebecca Smith.
Team scorekeeper/photographer/megaphone Kristen Bladel also received a team picture in a nice frame.
Congratulations to the Modsquad, and let me be the first to tell you what a pleasure it was for this reporter to cover the team this season. Keep an eye out for our upcoming feature "My Day with the Trophy".
