Maybe the single most important thing MODSQUAD will take away from this game is that you can never take any opponent for granted …
Coming off of their 14-2 victory on Wednesday, MODSQUAD was looking to build some momentum heading into the playoffs. Unfortunately, sloppy defense and a lack of timely hitting resulted in a humbling 18-12 loss to the hands of GRP Financial.
Perhaps you could argue that MODSQUAD was short handed, only five regulars in the starting lineup, or you could even say that this was the first time that MODSQUAD had to play two games within three days. Whatever you wish to call it, one thing was for sure; MODSQUAD was just going through the motions, looking like they were playing in a get-away game, rather than a 1st place clincher.
The first inning was all you needed to see to know what kind of a game it was. After MODSQUAD was unsuccessful in their attempts in taking an early lead, GRP Financial proceeded to score 11 runs in their bottom half of the first inning, mostly helped by five fielding errors by MODSQUAD. GRP Financial scored eight runs before the second out was even recorded.
MODSQUAD did hold their opponent to only seven runs the rest of the contest, however the deficit was too much to overcome. When the score was 17-10, MODSQUAD had a chance in the top of the fifth inning with the bases loaded and no outs to really cut in to the lead, but GRP Financial set the next three batters down without so much as breaking a sweat. The game was called after the top of the sixth inning due to time restrictions.
The lose drops MODSQUAD to 10-3, which is in a first place tie with Colonial and only one game ahead of third place Two Four. MODSQUAD does have the tie breaker in the head-to-head match-up with Colonial but MODSQUAD will have to win their final game on Thursday against Woodard & Curran, who almost beat MODSQUAD 13-12 earlier in the year.
